Fact #1: I made Oreos. I didn’t think it was possible, either.
Fact #2: They tasted just like the real ones.. on crack. So much better. So. Much.
Fact #3: They are extraordinarily better for your body than those blue plastic wrapped gems. (Goodbye gross high-fructose-I-don’t-even-know-this-looks-like-my-chemistry-homework ingredients.) Score. Double score.
Fact #4: You will become 700 times more popular if you bring a batch of these to school/work/anywhere else where humans congregate. I’m talking It Girl popular. Might as well just change your name to Kate Middleton. These are the #1 most crowd-pleasing cookie I have ever made. I mean, homemade Oreos…who does that? You. You do that. You’re awesome.
Sorry about all the paparazzi.
Falling short in the friends department? Whip out a batch of Oreos. Too much surplus milk in the fridge? Oreos. Little kid’s birthday party? Oreos. Grown up’s birthday party? Fruit tart.
Just kidding.. obviously Oreos.
Homemade Oreos
From Smitten Kitchen
Makes 25 to 30 sandwich cookies
For the chocolate wafers:
1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 cup unsweetened Dutch process cocoa
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 1/4 cups sugar
1/2 cup plus 2 tablespoons (1 1/4 sticks) room-temperature, unsalted butter
1 large egg
For the filling:
1/4 cup (1/2 stick) room-temperature, unsalted butter
1/4 cup vegetable shortening
2 cups sifted confectioners’ sugar
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- Set two racks in the middle of the oven. Preheat to 375°F.
- In a food processor, or bowl of an electric mixer, thoroughly mix the flour, cocoa, baking soda and powder, salt, and sugar. While pulsing, or on low speed, add the butter, and then the egg. Continue processing or mixing until dough comes together in a mass.
- Take rounded teaspoons of batter and place on a parchment paper-lined baking sheet approximately two inches apart. With moistened hands, slightly flatten the dough. Bake for 9 minutes, rotating once for even baking. Set baking sheets on a rack to cool.
- To make the cream, place butter and shortening in a mixing bowl, and at low speed, gradually beat in the sugar and vanilla. Turn the mixer on high and beat for 2 to 3 minutes until filling is light and fluffy.
- To assemble the cookies, in a pastry bag with a 1/2 inch, round tip, pipe teaspoon-size blobs of cream into the center of one cookie. Place another cookie, equal in size to the first, on top of the cream. Lightly press, to work the filling evenly to the outsides of the cookie. Continue this process until all the cookies have been sandwiched with cream. Dunk generously in milk.

just made these..seriously, TOOOO GOOD! these should be a sin! i was literally in heaven eating these, delicious!
I just stumbled upon your site. Love it!
“Might as well just change your name to Kate Middleton” = love
Don’t apologise for all the photos - they’re gorgeous! Can’t wait to try this recipe out.
i love the idea! no high fructose corn syrup!
I have wanted to make these forever! Yours look great!
Making homemade Oreos has been on my to-do list forever! Yours look great and make me inspired all over again to make them.
These are amazing! Love your photos too! I just saw this on SU like Maria. Love that site!!!
I just made these, and they turned out great! I added a little bit of nonfat milk to the cream filling, which gave it the texture of a buttercream frosting. Great recipe!
Just made these, ohhh man are they good. Definitely going to be a part of my wedding now! Kudos!
Bless you for including food processor instructions in addition to the stand mixer ones!
My life will not be complete until I make these. and consume them all myself.. Ill share the second batch.
My mom makes these with mint flavoring for the creme on the inside…SO good! You all should try it!
Mmmmm that is genius!! I’ll definitely try!!
Your hilarious, and these are bomb
These look delicious! The only issue is that unlike oreos, these are most definitely not vegan lol. Still worth the absense of high fructose corn syrup!
“I mean Homemade oreos…who does that? You. You do that. You’re awesome!”
You made my day!
Im definitly making these this week for that special girl haha! Thank you !!
Hahaha-loved your post! Definitely want to give these a try, I’ve only heard good things about them!

Can one substitute more butter for the shortening in the filling?
I really wish that you could, and feel free to try, but I don’t think that the texture and consistency will be the same. I found an organic, trans fat free shortening which makes me feel a little better about using it!
I’m going to make a batch for DH (hellllooooo wife points!) and plan to make half of ‘em using coconut oil instead of shortening. If it’s as full of win & awesome as I’m hoping, I’ll post back.
Yep, coconut oil worked fine - though there was a very noticeable coconut flavor. I thought it was yummy, though distinctly non-oreoish. I’ll try with butter only next time.
Yep, all butter was amazing. YUM
I have made them both ways, and I have to say, using only butter makes them even better.
Heh, nice! Did it noticeably soften up the consistency of the filling?
I made a chocolate penut butter filling instead
But the cookies don’t seem to baking right…they certainly aren’t as pretty as yours! Oh, well - I’ll keep trying…
Just made these. I used light brown sugar instead
Now they’re kind of chewy!
Great recipe and easy instructions!!!
Mine didn’t get as fluffy as yours…but they taste great
Question… These make ur popular with the ladies if ur a girl? Or can a guy become popular with the ladies too….?
A guy would definitely score points with me if he brought me homemade Oreos… Just saying.
Within a minute of stumbling on this recipe, I was driving to Publix to buy butter and shortening. Half an hour later I was making these and then me and my family were gobbling them up and clogging our arteries. So worth the calories. Thanks for the recipe!

NOMNOMNOM… These look AMAZZZZING! Def going to make these this weekend while the hubby is out of town! MORE.FOR.ME!
i made these monday in a splurge to make my cold go away… didnt work… but my husband and parents loved them!
I was really happy my cookies came out almost all exactly the same size! But for some reason i was craving a peanut butter icing.. or even a mint cookie!
ill let you know how it comes out! Thanks for a simple timeless treat!
These are amazing! I made 2 batches within two days! My family and friends love them and can’t get enough of them! Thanks for the recipe:)
My friend told me about your blog and it’s so cute. Yum, who doesn’t love oreo cookies?
When i made these they came out a little thin..any suggestions as what to do to make them more thick?
Hmm… try chilling the dough after forming the cookies into disks. Usually when cookies turn out too thin, it’s because the butter was too soft when added into the batter. If that doesn’t work, a tablespoon or two of extra flour will do the trick as well!
OMG….Need..to..make
Just found your site, it’s WONDERFUL!!!
Dude, where have you been all of my life?! This post, like the rest of your site, is wonderful. Thank you for making my weekend, and giving me my next baking adventure. Cheers!
I cannot find dutch process cocoa…what do I do?
Try it with natural cocoa, the results might not be exactly the same but it’s worth a shot. I still don’t really know the differences between the two, but here’s a really good explanation: http://www.davidlebovitz.com/2010/02/cocoa-powder-faq-dutch-process-v/
I made these in a double batch, half white sugar and half light brown! they came out more like oreo cakesters! They were amazing, i used the smallest ice cream scooper to make them nice and big, thanks so much for this amazing recipe!
Jordana, Brielle’s Nana here. You are amazing, my dear!!! Just wanted to say hello and tell you so. You’re going places; a wonderful career ahead in whatever you decide to pursue. Enjoy it, enjoy wonderful New York. Do the girl’s in your dorm have any idea how lucky they are?! Much love, Lynda xoxox
Oh my goodness thank you, you are too too sweet! This made my day.
Hi my dear, A question…are you coming back to Ca. soon? I am doing a birthday party for my dads 80th. His favorite cake is pineapple upside down cake. I was wondering if you are going to be here, and could and would, make a pineapple upside down cupcake? I can’t imagine commissioning anyone else to do it, but will understand if you’re too busy or unavailable. The party is 9/25.
I would absolutely love to do this for you! I am totally available, so just facebook message me for details!
Kudos for a good recipe. I will mention though that the trademarked oreos are completely vegan, while yours use butter and eggs. And in my experience, everything in baking tastes better with butter and eggs! Again, not trying to harsh anyone’s mellow, as they do look very appetizing. Just clearing things up for anyone interested in why these taste so much better.
making theeese. making them. i feel like i’ve seen them on various other blogs and just kind of thought ‘meh’, but the way you described them/your pictures convinced me. i like friends!
Could we get some nutritional information, please. (per cookie or per serving size if you define serving size) Thanks
I’m sorry, but not only would I have no idea how to calculate nutrition info, but I don’t believe in counting calories! Dessert is dessert.. not meant to be healthy, but good for your soul!
Wow! I’m so excited-going to soften the butter now . . .
Awesome! Something to make me more popular lol jk. Sounds delicious totally gonna make these!
Hmmm so I have found something I would like to tackle on my 20th. (I must admit I love the smell of baked good and the lingering smell in the house).
You are my hero for posting this!!!!!!! =D THANK YOU!!!!
Stumbled, Baked them! LOVE them! I accidently made them pregnancy size tho… lol… next time will have to make them MUCH smaller!
Made these today and they are good cookies, but I can’t call them oreos…more like brownie cookies. They were chewy (which usually is a good thing), so I’m wondering if they need to bake longer? I might experiment and try omitting the egg and increase the butter or add shortening. Then roll it out and cut out circles I want more of a crunch. I had no problem getting consistant size and shape by following your instructions. The flavor is good too, just not an oreo for me.
Mine definitely weren’t chewy, so maybe I’d try baking them longer! If you experiment with good results, let me know! I’d love to hear
OMGosh! I may have to try these TODAY! My boys LOVE oreos and can eat a whole bag in one sitting. (I have three boys, so a bag just doesn’t stand a chance!)
Just got through making these for my boys! They LOVED them! I had to put the cookie jar up high so they wouldn’t eat them all in one sitting! This recipe will go into my favorites cookbook!!!! Oooo and its perfect for me to put in my Christmas gift baking!!!
This is something my kids will really love to make and eat, when they have their friends over the house.
These cookies look delicious & your photographs are beautiful!
These turned out great! I put a stamp of my initials on top too! Super cute!
So, if I make huge batches of these, can I freeze them and use them when I need to?
I’ve never frozen them, but I’m sure they would freeze well, yes! Or you could pipe the dough onto cookie sheets, freeze them, and then keep the frozen disks in a plastic bag in the freezer. Then you could bake up cookies any time!
I just popped over from Stumble Upon.
LOOOOVE it!
When making these we were a little concerned about the icing consistency but they turned out surprisingly good.
Just made these. Only yielded 12 for me… I think I made them a little big… Still delectable though. Oh… and now they’re gone. Awesome!
My daughter loves oreos, this would be the best cookies to make for her. I love your blog, I will stay to follow.
