Fact #4: You will become 700 times more popular if you bring a batch of these to school/work/anywhere else where humans congregate. I’m talking It Girl popular. Might as well just change your name to Kate Middleton. These are the #1 most crowd-pleasing cookie I have ever made. I mean, homemade Oreos…who does that? You. You do that. You’re awesome.

Falling short in the friends department? Whip out a batch of Oreos. Too much surplus milk in the fridge? Oreos. Little kid’s birthday party? Oreos. Grown up’s birthday party? Fruit tart.

Just kidding.. obviously Oreos.

Homemade Oreos

From Smitten Kitchen

Makes 25 to 30 sandwich cookies

For the chocolate wafers:
1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 cup unsweetened Dutch process cocoa
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 1/4 cups sugar
1/2 cup plus 2 tablespoons (1 1/4 sticks) room-temperature, unsalted butter
1 large egg

For the filling:
1/4 cup (1/2 stick) room-temperature, unsalted butter
1/4 cup vegetable shortening
2 cups sifted confectioners’ sugar
2 teaspoons vanilla extract

  1. Set two racks in the middle of the oven. Preheat to 375°F.
  2. In a food processor, or bowl of an electric mixer, thoroughly mix the flour, cocoa, baking soda and powder, salt, and sugar. While pulsing, or on low speed, add the butter, and then the egg. Continue processing or mixing until dough comes together in a mass.
  3. Take rounded teaspoons of the dough (yes, just a teaspoon. these cookies spread a lot while baking) and roll them into uniform rounds, then place them 2-3 inches apart on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Slightly press down the rounds with your fingertip, and then refrigerate the sheet for 10 minutes. Once the dough is chilled, bake the sheets for 6-8 minutes, just until the tops are cracking. Let the cookies cool on the sheets for 5 minutes, then transfer them to a wire cooling rack. The cookies will crisp up sufficiently after cooling.
  4. To make the cream, place butter and shortening in a mixing bowl, and at low speed, gradually beat in the sugar and vanilla. Turn the mixer on high and beat for 2 to 3 minutes until filling is light and fluffy.
  5. To assemble the cookies, using a pastry bag or ziplock with the end snipped off, pipe teaspoon-size blobs of cream into the center of one cookie. Place another cookie, equal in size to the first, on top of the cream. Lightly press, to work the filling evenly to the outsides of the cookie. Continue this process until all the cookies have been sandwiched with cream. Dunk generously in milk.
Cookies and friends. Couldn’t ask for much more.

  8. I just made these, and they turned out great! I added a little bit of nonfat milk to the cream filling, which gave it the texture of a buttercream frosting. Great recipe!

    Can one substitute more butter for the shortening in the filling?

    • I really wish that you could, and feel free to try, but I don’t think that the texture and consistency will be the same. I found an organic, trans fat free shortening which makes me feel a little better about using it!

      I’m going to make a batch for DH (hellllooooo wife points!) and plan to make half of ‘em using coconut oil instead of shortening. If it’s as full of win & awesome as I’m hoping, I’ll post back.

        Yep, coconut oil worked fine – though there was a very noticeable coconut flavor. I thought it was yummy, though distinctly non-oreoish. I’ll try with butter only next time.

        Try palm oil shortening (Whole Foods and similar stores carry it)…almost identical texture to veg shortening only not hydrogenated. It is _the_perfect substitute.

    I was really happy my cookies came out almost all exactly the same size! But for some reason i was craving a peanut butter icing.. or even a mint cookie!

    When i made these they came out a little thin..any suggestions as what to do to make them more thick?

    • Hmm… try chilling the dough after forming the cookies into disks. Usually when cookies turn out too thin, it’s because the butter was too soft when added into the batter. If that doesn’t work, a tablespoon or two of extra flour will do the trick as well!

  33. I made these in a double batch, half white sugar and half light brown! they came out more like oreo cakesters! They were amazing, i used the smallest ice cream scooper to make them nice and big, thanks so much for this amazing recipe!

    Kudos for a good recipe. I will mention though that the trademarked oreos are completely vegan, while yours use butter and eggs. And in my experience, everything in baking tastes better with butter and eggs! Again, not trying to harsh anyone’s mellow, as they do look very appetizing. Just clearing things up for anyone interested in why these taste so much better.

    • I’m sorry, but not only would I have no idea how to calculate nutrition info, but I don’t believe in counting calories! Dessert is dessert.. not meant to be healthy, but good for your soul! :)

    Made these today and they are good cookies, but I can’t call them oreos…more like brownie cookies. They were chewy (which usually is a good thing), so I’m wondering if they need to bake longer? I might experiment and try omitting the egg and increase the butter or add shortening. Then roll it out and cut out circles I want more of a crunch. I had no problem getting consistant size and shape by following your instructions. The flavor is good too, just not an oreo for me.

    • I’ve never frozen them, but I’m sure they would freeze well, yes! Or you could pipe the dough onto cookie sheets, freeze them, and then keep the frozen disks in a plastic bag in the freezer. Then you could bake up cookies any time!

    As concerning substituting. You can easily substitute regular cocoa for dutch process with out much difference bu cannot do dutch for regular……

    These Oreos are fantastic!! I just made a double batch of them and they are delicious. The only thing I did differently was that I cooled the cookies in the fridge right after they came out of the oven (before I assembled them). They still turned out great. My whole dorm expresses eternal gratitude :)

    Oh boy. I just made these and they are truly amazing! Mine had a little more ‘chew’ than a regular Oreo, and I used all butter instead of shortening. I ate a few and froze the rest. I’m going to make cookies and cream ice cream…Next time I’ll try a mint variation!

    I have these in the oven and I keep stealing little pieces of the dough! Also, I don’t have a food processor or a fancy mixer- I did it with my hand mixer and though I was skeptical at first and I got fine powder all over the place, I was relieved to see it work! I eventually had to stop mixing and squish all the dough together myself, but still…it worked! Now onto the cream filling :)
